    AMOS

The last few days had passed by slowly, without Tate around Amos had no schedule to prompt him.  Time moved at uneven paces, but for some reason he found a peacefulness in this kind of uneventful life.  He followed the colt everywhere, as if Sunny was a new found master.  The staff of the Double T allowed it, thinking that anything causing the usually brazen colt to calm down, would be fine by Tate.
Amos curled up in the deep straw of Sunny’s stall at night, and romped with him in their very own pasture in the morning.  It was as if the little dog had taken a vacation from his life, and was having a fling, not unlike his absent master.  Everyone at the ranch got a kick out of the way the two of them played.  Amos would bounce around on his hind feet, barking furiously up at his overgrown friend.  The stud colt would skip around the little dog, carefully dodging him with his hooves, but eventually bowl him over with his Quarter Horse head.  That was the part that Amos liked best.
In the afternoon they napped in the shade, then they would drink from the creek together when the sun was high overhead.  All attempts to groom or exercise the colt while Tate was away had been forgotten.  He and Amos were fast becoming a sight for sore eyes.  Their outward appearances had no inclination that either of them possessed any show quality, much less a champion bloodline.
In all reality Tate’s disappearance had not been that bad for the unusual duo.  The colt found some amount of serenity in Amos, and the little dog had filled up a lonely gap with Sunny.  The only thing that was bothering Amos now, was his stomach.  Rosario, Tate’s housekeeper, refused to bring his food out to the barn and Amos had no intention of giving her the opportunity to lock him up again.  Jodie had been throwing him a handful of dog chow when she fed the other ranch dogs at night, but the difference was upsetting his digestion.  He was experiencing some diarrhea, but nobody noticed when you lived outside.
Sunny gave the tiny black dog an amused look as he drug his rear end around on the grass.  Amos could not figure out why they had to come down and stand by the gate when dinner was not for another half hour.  The dog could not think about food any time soon, but the rotund colt looked as if food was all he thought about.  Although close, they could not read each other’s minds.  The colt was really wondering when a person was going to come and take his fuzzy friend from him, and he had been skipped before at dinner time because a person chose to forget to feed him instead of taking a chance on being bitten.  People were the root of all problems as far as the colt was concerned.

    ★    Friday.........night           ASHLEY JO

“What’s all this?”......Jesse asked his wife.

“It’s not what you think?”.....A.J. confirmed.

        “What do I think?”

He looked at her slyly and tried to chew his salad without smiling.  He noticed that she had gone to some trouble with tonight’s dinner.  The table was elegantly set, and although salad, spaghetti, and garlic bread were something they dined on often, wine and cloth napkins were out of place.  He never forgot special occasions for dates were not something that he considered minor details, and he was sure that this was a typical unmarked Friday night. She was either proud of something that he had done and wanted to reward him, or she wanted something. He studied her for a moment, she never wore make up but her face was freshly scrubbed and smooth and he could tell that she was trying not to look as tired as she felt.  Her hair was set free of its usual harsh braided ponytail and seductively curling in all directions. It was not as bright now as it had been in the summer, but it’s shimmer never ceased to distract Jesse.

“I think that you take this as my way of suggesting that I want us to make love”

“No!”.....he would never need all of this coaxing, and he knew that she was aware of that,

she was his wife after all.....”I think that this is your way of showing me appreciation, and

maybe you will appreciate me a little more once we get to the bedroom”.

He was clearly self centered, as predicted.  A.J. was not surprised. She liked and hated that about him. Sometimes that particular trait made it a hell of a lot easier for her to hide herself, but at the same time it caused her to difficulty in being selfish.

“See!.....You are all wrong, I did this to set the mood.  I wanted to open you up to conversation.  I was trying to create an enjoyable atmosphere, so that we could...talk”.

“You have clearly set the mood”......Jesse said as he leaned in to kiss her.

He could hardly resist the fact that she had changed clothes just to create an atmosphere, as she had put it.  He was so used to seeing her in jeans and her El Tango Caliente t-shirt and apron, that the little black dress of tonight was almost comical. Granted it hugged her in all the places that he liked to look at, but knew that was clearly not the response she was after. Even still, ever persistent on getting things to another level, he perservered.  It was not so funny when she quickly turned her face away from his advances.

“I would like for you be serious”......she stiffened as she spoke.

Jesse knew and fully respected the tone that she had taken with him.  It was a tone that left no room for suggestion, she had made up her mind on some unknown issue and now wanted to explain her reasoning to him.  He went back to his salad, eating it and watching her push the lettuce around on her plate.  This was not going to be good.  He was half expecting to have to drag it out of her, then she just started to blurt things out.
